Your life today is essentially the result of your habits. You are the creation of your own conscious and subconscious actions. What you repeatedly, and sometimes subconsciously do, ultimately shapes who you are as an individual. A habit is an action or practice that an individual engages in regularly, and are often named as such because they are hard to give up. They are a behavioural pattern, acquired by frequent repetition, and over time become something that you do subliminally. Every habit, regardless of whether it is perceived as good or bad, follows the same three-step cycle.
The first step in the cycle is a trigger or reminder. Often there will be a trigger that sets off a reminder for you to act on a certain behaviour. Common triggers include certain locations, times, or emotional states, for example, some people eat when they are feeling bored or stressed. Secondly, you have your routine which is your actual habit behaviour. Last in the cycle, is a reward which is the benefit gained from the behaviour and is often what entices you to repeat the cycle to step one.
Many habits, such as smoking, may offer a momentarily rewarding feeling, however, these can be detrimental to your health and difficult to give up.
